The men's 1st team suffer a disappointing home defeat to Western Wildcats. Match report by Ally Dougall.

This Sunday brought the arrival of Western Wildcats to Pelican Park. Gordonians were looking to get their season back on track after a combination of poor results and a tough fixture list left them towards the bottom end of the table. Western, however were coming into this fixture full of confidence after a win against last years play off champions Grange.

The game started at a hectic and uncontrolled pace with both teams stringing together flowing moves without creating any real clear cut chances. The game did begin to settle after fifteen minutes and it was during that period where the boys in yellow put together several crisp passes and some lovely off the ball running to allow Rory McCann with a chance to beat the keeper. Unfortunately on this occasion the ball did not find the back of the net, which set the tone for the match.

After some confusion at the back and foot foul not being spotted western were presented a glorious chance to take the lead and despite some heroic defensive tackles the ball broke out to Scott McCartney who rifled the ball into the net from his reverse.

Despite this for the remainder of the half Gordonians remained composed and dominated possession leading to two corners before the interval. Unfortunately, those chances were not taken and proved costly.

Almost straight after the break Western found themselves probing in and around the home team’s circle and took their chances when they were presented to them. Despite some fine saves from Sam McGrath, rebounds were smothered up by the Wildcats. 2-0 quickly became 3-0 and the concentration levels from the Pelicans seemed to have dropped despite their encouraging display.

Gordonians tried to rally winning a couple of short corners and creating a couple of chances but a lack of positivity and communication all over the pitch resulted in mistakes to which Western capitalised. The score ended up at 6-0, but the result does not reflect a match which was evenly contested for large portions and had the home side taken their chances early doors it could have been a very different game.
