Gordonians Men's 2s and Merlins Gordonians Ladies 2s have both been at the top of their respective North District Division One tables since the beginning of the season. Both are undefeated, and both have conceded less than one goal per match while at the other end scoring 73 goals (men) and 47 goals (ladies). Their latest results are a 2-0 win for our Ladies vs BAMBC and a 1-0 victory for our Men vs GCW Men's 2nds.
Our Ladies 2s are also in the Scottish Women's District Plate competition with a semi-final to play at home to FMG Monarchs Ladies on 12th April. We hope to receive a match report on that one to post for you then.
Here is a match report from Alan Clark on our Men's win yesterday:
Gordonians Men's 2nds 1 Granite City Wanderers Men's 2nds 0
Gordonians 2s maintained their 100% record with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Granite City Wanderers 2s at Countesswells on the Tiger Turf, in what proved to be a challenging and attritional contest.
With a much-changed squad, the 2s were without several regular youngsters who had deservedly stepped up to the 1st team—exactly the pathway the club aims to create by developing and progressing young talent. Further absences saw Kenny Steele and Stefan Jachnik away representing Scotland at an indoor Masters tournament in Nottingham, alongside other unavailabilities.
In response, Gordonians blended experience with youth. Neil Paterson, Mark Palmer, and Peter Fraser brought valuable composure, while Leo Wishart, Aleks Rennie, and Wade Williamson stepped in impressively. Williamson was outstanding throughout at right back, showing maturity beyond his years. At the heart of the defence, Rob Barr delivered his usual “Rolls Royce” performance, while goalkeeper Dale Kemp was exceptional once again, securing another clean sheet.
In midfield, Colin Gambles played a disciplined and selfless role alongside the energetic Adam Christie, Leo Wishart and Matthew Tomkins. Up front, Nick Benson, Alan Clark, Craig Beattie, and Rennie rotated effectively, with Rennie’s direct running and work rate particularly catching the eye.
The only goal came in the first half, with Clark reacting quickest to sweep home from a loose ball at a short corner. In difficult, windy conditions, it was a match that required resilience and game management—qualities Gordonians showed in abundance.
Thanks also to Will Serle Snr. for umpiring.
