GORDONIANS MEN 2s are NORTH DISTRICT CHAMPIONS for the 5th YEAR IN A ROW

Youth Admin1 May - 14:42

Our traditional mix of experience and youth in the 2s has developed promising schoolboys into players ready to play for the 1st team.

Gordonians 2s delivered a statement penultimate week with back-to-back 5–1 home victories, underlining the squad’s depth and resilience despite the absence of several key players. With Adam Walker, Matthew Tomkins, Eli Clark, Struan Mackie and Colin Gambles all missing one or both fixtures, the strength of the wider group came to the fore in impressive fashion.

GORDONIANS MEN'S 2s 5 v ABERDEEN 1s 1
The first challenge came on Tuesday night under the lights at Countesswells against Aberdeen. Gordonians were rocked early, conceding inside the opening minute—the first time they had trailed all season. However, the response was calm and assured. Sticking to their structure and style, they gradually asserted control and turned the game around convincingly. A clinical hat-trick from Adam Walker led the scoring, with further goals from Kenny Steele and Alan Clark.

A key factor in the comeback was the platform provided by a disciplined defensive unit, who regrouped quickly after the early setback and limited Aberdeen’s chances. Behind them, goalkeeper Dale Kemp made several crucial saves at important moments, ensuring the deficit remained manageable and giving his side the confidence to push forward. In midfield, Max Steele delivered an outstanding display—arguably his best of the season—while Juan Harcus Garcia impressed in a slightly unfamiliar midfield role, showing composure and quality since returning from early-season injury. GORDONIANS MEN 2s 5 v G.C.W. 3s 1
Saturday’s fixture against Granite City 3s brought another 5–1 victory, though the visitors proved organised and hard-working, making Gordonians earn their dominance. Despite this, the home side always looked in control, built again on a solid defensive performance and intelligent midfield play.

Kenny Steele was a standout once more, scoring twice in a more advanced role after spending much of the season in midfield. One delicate “tippy” finish in particular highlighted his attacking quality. Nick Benson added a neat goal, while Alan Clark struck twice in the second half to secure the win. The highlight of the match came from a superbly executed short corner, with Matthew Tomkins and Max Steele combining cleverly to create the chance for Clark to finish. (Report by Alan Clark)

The final and 16th match of the 2s season was played on Tuesday evening 28th April.

GORDONIANS MEN 2s 1 v GORDONIANS MEN 3s 2
The match turned out to be a lot closer than anyone would have expected due to the 3s having four strong replacements for their unavailable players, and the 2s missing four of their regulars. As a result, the game ebbed and flowed from end to end throughout. The 2s did get ahead early on thanks to their top scorer Adam Walker who met a cross mid-air and deftly guided the ball with his stick into the far corner of the net. The 3s replied with two goals of their own scored by Scott Thomson. The first of these was the perfect reward for a successful ball chase to the bye line by George Jones to reach what seemed like a lost cause. George's cross was also met mid-air, this time by Scott Thomson whose shot gave Dale Kemp who has had an excellent season in the 2s goal no chance to save. Mention should be made of 3s regulars Neil Paterson, Gary Henderson, Mark Palmer, Mike Rennie and Steve Campbell who were all putting in strong performances.

Half time score: 1-2

The 2s worked extremely hard to create chances particularly in the second half and did win a number of corners but were denied on a number of occasions by Fraser Bruce who was in superb form in the 3s goal. The hard work in midfield by Kenny Steele, Max Steele and Owen Wright and in defence by Rob Barr, Stef Jachnik, Alan Clark and Adam Christie continued right to the end as they strove to maintain their undefeated record. The standard of hockey played by both teams was a great credit to the club with a number of talented schoolboys excelling alongside their more experienced team-mates. (Report by John Mowat)

Full time score 1-2. So after 15 wins from 15 games, our Men's 2s season ended with a defeat to our own 3s.

The final word goes to our 2s league-winning captain, Alan Clark:
"The exam period caused us a problem with Struan and Eli missing tonight. Matthew Tomkins and Juan were also a miss for us too. But at the end of the day success for the team this year was all about blooding the talented youngsters and allowing them to flourish alongside the likes of Stef, Rob, Kenny, and Adam and it has been mission accomplished on that front. Our young boys have improved vastly over the season and are now able to push for 1st team places which is what we want - Max, Eli, Juan, Struan and Matthew. Their attitude, work rate, skill level, and desire are all the qualities we want in our youngsters so the club should be very proud of them. "
