Gordonians 2XI 4-0 Aberdeen Hockey Club 1XI
Scorers - Graham Pittendrigh x 2, Aleksander Wojchiechowski, James Dick
Man of the Match - James Dick
The Gordonians 2nd Team got their season finally off to a start at home to a combative and robust Aberdeen Hockey Club on Saturday. There were a few new faces in the squad young and old.
The home team dominated the first half, ahead in terms of possession and chances created. Graham Pittendrigh got the goalscoring started with a solid strike from a penalty corner after some neat interchange down the left by schoolboys James Dick and Craig Dickson. Man of the match James then quickly scored a magnificent reverse stick shot from the left of the D after twisting and turning. Gordonians had chances to go further ahead before the break.
After the break Aberdeen were never out the game, pushing their forwards higher and putting pressure on the home team defence. The won a series of penalty corners but couldn't find a way past goalkeeper Andrew Moody. The Gordonians defenders shot themselves in foot by not being aware of the new 5m rule for a free hit around the D.
But as the goal never came, and some last home pressure resulted in 2 quick fire goals to secure the game. Graham Pittendrigh swiveled on his reverse and found the bottom corner in a congested D (see photo). Aleksander Wojchiecowski ("Woj") then tapped in from a few millimeters out after a penalty corner fell kindly.
A solid start for the home team with a big test next week in the Cup away to Grange 2s.
