Aberdeen Standard Gordonians yesterday completed a very successful season with a League and Plate double at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre by securing victory over Stepps HC in the Scottish Plate Final.
An exciting match was in prospect after the recent league meeting of these two teams had resulted in a narrow 4-3 victory for Gordonians. Our lads took control of midfield early in the match when our movement on and off the ball stretched the Stepps defence to the point where Rory found himself unmarked at the top of the circle. Rory took full advantage to open the scoring with a great strike. Stepps came much more into the game and forced a string of short corners which Jack and his defence successfully repelled. This was Stepps best period of the game so it was against the run of play when Gordonians scored again. This time it was a great finish by our captain Craig who connected with a right wing cross at the back post. Stepps then got back in the game with an expertly converted corner drag flick by Douglas Simpson to make the score 2-1 to Gordonians at half -time.
In the second half our midfield domination led to two excellent corner goals scored by Jack and Craig to take control of the match at 4-1. However more was to come in the form of an exciting 5th goal by Ali Provan in the closing seconds of the match. Ali broke through their defence at great speed and as the onrushing goalie approached, he managed to flick the ball over his left shoulder. As it crossed the line just inside the right hand post, the squad on and off the pitch and our many supporters In the stand celebrated a convincing 5-1 victory.
