Gordonians 2s continued their impressive push to retain the league title with two excellent away victories this week — a scintillating 10–1 midweek win under the lights at Rubislaw against Aberdeen, followed by a more measured but equally valuable 2–0 triumph away to Ellon on Saturday. The results underline both the attacking potency and growing maturity of a side blending youth and experience to great effect.
ABERDEEN 1 – 10 GORDONIANS 2s (Wednesday, Rubislaw)
Wednesday evening saw our Men's 2nd team produce their most complete performance of the season so far, sweeping aside Aberdeen in style. From the outset, the visitors imposed themselves with fast, purposeful hockey, combining sharp passing and movement with a ruthless edge in front of goal.
Adam Walker led the charge with a remarkable six-goal performance, showcasing both his clinical finishing and creativity. Highlights included a superb reverse-stick strike and a deft glancing tip-in from a pinpoint Kenny Steele pass. Craig Beattie and Eli Clark each added two more as Gordonians’ attacking play overwhelmed the home defence.
While the younger players once again caught the eye with their energy and composure, they were ably supported by the experienced core of the side, ensuring balance and control throughout. A single consolation goal for Aberdeen was the only blemish on an otherwise dominant display — one that reaffirmed Gordonians’ title ambitions.
ELLON 0 – 2 GORDONIANS 2s (Saturday, Meldrum Academy)
Saturday’s visit to Ellon presented a very different type of challenge with changes to the squad due to the absence of some of the youngsters…..and Adam Walker!! After Wednesday’s fireworks, this was a more laboured and patient performance against an organised and disciplined Ellon side. The hosts defended resolutely and made space hard to find, forcing Gordonians to show composure and patience in their build-up play.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Nick Benson reacted quickest to a loose ball in the circle, finishing neatly to give the visitors the lead. Despite continued pressure, Ellon’s defensive resilience kept the game tight, and it wasn’t until the closing stages that Gordonians made the points safe — young Matthew Tomkins, excellent once again, sealing the win with a well-executed drag flick from a penalty corner after a superb Kenny Steele corner stop. Rob Barr was also unfortunate to see a reverse stick effort hit the post in the latter stages.
At the other end, goalkeeper Dale Kemp recorded the team’s first clean sheet of the season, capping another fine individual performance. His calm presence and strong communication were crucial in ensuring the unbeaten run remained intact.
Two away wins in four days leave Gordonians Men's 2s in an excellent position with 4 wins out of 4 as the first half of the season gathers pace. The blend of youthful flair, experienced leadership, and growing defensive solidity suggest the champions are building the form and confidence required for another strong title challenge.
