Scotland’s U18 girls defeated Ireland 2-0 for a positive start to the Four Nations Tournament in Cardiff today.
Manager Judith Marshall said: “The girls played extremely well, they held control the entire match. The only way Ireland would have had a chance would have been to break our concentration and they couldn’t do that.”
Scotland’s double dose came early with goals, scored by Louise Fleming (Merlins Gordonians), hitting the net in the fourth and seventh minute from penalty corners.

Scotland’s U18 girls beat England 3-0 on penalty strokes, after a two all full time score, to take first place at the Four Nations Tournament in Cardiff today.
Manager Judith Marshall said: “It was a phenomenal game, the girls worked very hard and our fitness gave us the edge.”
Louise Fleming (Merlins Gordonians) put in a great effort, scoring both of Scotland’s full time goals. Fitness became vital as the Scots went down a player for 17 minutes after a yellow card in the second half and, after being up 2-1, a penalty stroke allowed England to equalise for a two all full time score.
Marshall added: “There were some calls we didn’t agree with, we had a penalty stroke put against us and a few other things but the girls concentrated and stayed strong. We played the ball around well.”
The Scots redeemed themselves from a 0-1 lost to England yesterday, Marshall explained; “Yesterday’s game was very close, we weren’t out of it. It was an interesting situation as both teams were trying not to go give away too much of their tactics in order to make impact in today’s final.”
She concluded: “The year’s programme was in build up to this tournament, we came in undefeated, having beaten some of Europe’s top teams, but we knew England as current European Champions were going to be the team to beat. The squad has great fitness, good skills and the girls have gelled together well to put in a real team effort; they deserve this.”
The future looks promising as only seven players will move on and the squad is gearing up for the European Trophy in Madrid next year.
