Grand Masters Home Nations at Countesswells

By Youth Admin

24 international matches involving Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales were played at Countesswells, Rubislaw, and A.S.V.

Over the weekend of 24-26 May a total of sixteen men’s international squads came to Aberdeen with twelve of them competing for the right to be crowned Home Nations Champions at Over 60, Over, 65, and Over 70. This was the first Home Nations tournament held in Aberdeen at those age groups.

Gordonians were well represented by Billy Taylor and Derek Johnstone at Over 60, and Bernie Morrison at Over 65 who also captained his squad. It was in fact Bernie who, after checking with RGC, proposed to Scottish Hockey that they host the tournament in Aberdeen with our two pitches and the pavilion at Countesswells as the main hub.

There was also Gordonian interest in the England Over 60s as former 1st team full back Chris Billington made a return to Aberdeen where he attended University and became our first Open member in 1975. He was delighted to meet up with some of his old teammates. (Our younger members may remember Chris & Linda’s son, John Billington, who played for our1sts while working at AAM.)

RGC Head Groundsman, Donny Reid, was congratulated on the excellent condition of his pitches which were appreciated by all the teams.

All four tournaments were won by England. Scotland were runners up in the 60s and 65s losing only to England.
